Legal Process Outsourcing - LPO - Recruitment - Eligibility Criteria

Legal Process Outsourcing - LPO Jobs - Recruitment - Eligibility Criteria

How to join an LPO?

This may be bit surprising start instead of the usual query "What is an LPO 0r Legal Process Outsourcing Unit?”. But let me tell you, I have seen this subject with my own perspective and I understand it becomes complimentary information to make aware of what an LPO or Legal process Outsourcing services. Further, this discussion is not projected towards procedures or technicalities for setting up an LPO but would like to put this discussion for those aspiring to enter LPO sector.

With experience of more than 3 years in LPO industry, I had good chance in analyzing ways to attract a LPO unit’s Human Resources cell but not before making a point that there are no shortcuts for getting an opportunity to work for an LPO. It is also good to understand the fact that LPO job can never become shortcut and easy income generator as opposed to traditional court practice in India. This is because major LPO recruiters prefer people having substantial hands on legal practice experience in courts of law.

LPO firms carryout work depending on requirements of their clients. In India almost 95% LPO work is derived from US or the UK based law firms. The services may be in the nature of paralegal work like legal research, document review, contract revising, summarizing, organising, transcribing (voice to text) and also researching other legal ancillary issues. As per my understanding, it is a myth that there exists a division in nature of work in LPO sector, such as High-End or Low-End legal work. Some LPO firms usually brand them so only to gain attention but in reality end up doing all kind of available work. This is because at the end of the day revenues earned by the LPO firm is what really matters. The fact stands away as any law firm or an end user who off-shores work, does only with an aim to cut their office expenses without compromise in quality. It is only the efficiency of an LPO unit to handle the inflow of work in its own nature and not on High-End or Low-End basis. Hence, folks no need to worry about the myth prevailing in so.

The important requirements for an LPO job are: Graduation from an University (law graduates and Post-graduates will have an edge), knowledge of using computers and word processing, speeding typing, proficiency in English (plain English is what is preferred), legal analytical and drafting skills (concise writing preferred), attention to detail, positive outlook to learn fast and bring out innovative and reliable solutions.

Apart from all the above requirements one need to have resume prepared to highlight their skills and personality. As it is and as one may understand due to the age of LPO sector India and the fade experience of the HR departments in an LPO unit, some resumes may tend to fail to gain attention from them. It is always better to highlight the research skills on computer, drafting techniques, attention to detail and proficiency in English and willingness aptitude to learn new things.

The recruitment methods in most of the LPO units are identical and sometime one may come across same set of test papers and questions. While facing a writing test for LPO unit serving United States client or end user, it is always better to implement active conversation method and concise writing. US law firms are now widely implementing plain English techniques for lawyers to reach their clients more effectively. Aptitude test usually consists of general objective questionnaire testing ones reasoning ability and has specified time limit. Interview as a rule (typically followed by LPO Units) is conducted by the operations head culminates the process with subject line and some personal questions. It is not a hardcore rule in LPO sector that a person graduating in IPR, International Law or an LPO course trained will be directly recruited into an LPO Unit as the recruitment is purely based on merit and exhibiting ones skills at the right time. It is never a surprising part and also during my tenure with LPO Unit I had seen science graduates outclass law graduates in an LPO. Hence, it is substantiated that merit really matters.

Here are some websites of LPO Units in India and I feel may help LPO aspirants. Below sites are direct extracts from a fellow Orkuter’s message and I am very thankful to him for the same which may help many law graduates in securing employment in a suitable LPO. I am further researching on this and hope to add more refined information to this shortly. If any body likes to add in comments and information they are welcome to do so.
